From average, to dull, mildly interesting, and now hilarious – the eighth Madoka Magica movie marketing image, a frame taken straight from the TV series, sports sadist Sayaka making a facial expression most amusing.
What to even call this kind of visage is a mystery in itself. Legitimately, there’s a definite overwhelming essence of seriousness – yet at face value, the expression seems to be just that, alongside an added injection of cluelessness, and basic dismay. This expressions resembles that of one with their cognitive processes not operating at 100% – and this isn’t to reference any kind of illness, rather, it could be subsequent turnout of a distraction.
Sadistic Sayaka looks as if something occurred, and it required a deep reaction – yet she’s not aware what kind of non-lingual response to give, ultimately resulting in this mixed mess of a facial expression.
Interestingly, it’s not that her visage seems synthetic – the natural traits are certainly present, such as accurate brow angling, a head tilt realistic, and various other different facets all adding to a single look. However, there just remains something, the mouth perhaps, which makes this display a little bit more than chuckle inducing upon first glance – as well as any number of glances to follow thereafter.
Advertising on this level may actually succeed – as it may indeed be worth torturing oneself by going to a theater, paying up for the film, and getting surrounded by raunchy weirdoes called “otaku” for several hours whilst witnessing a television series you’ve already seen, all over again, if it means being able to ridicule the 2-D characters on screen.
