A key visual for Haganai’s soon to arrive second season has become available – with no notable discrepant in character design besides, of course, a short-haired Yozora, and a visible overall refinement in style.
Now despite everyone looking nearly the same as we’ve last seen them, there is visual significance beyond their appearance – or to be more specific, their posing and arrangement. The scene looks very dynamic, just as one would expect of Haganai – and this tells the onlooker of the ecstatic and loose atmosphere and activities awaiting within the second season. Yet more interesting than that, notice how the perversely twisted science universe girl seems to be more upfront than one would have seen her within promotional imagery of season one.
This is implying that she’s gained a greater role – and not only that, her placement behind, yet in between Yozora and the meatbag essentially speaks for itself. A character formerly serving little purpose other than comic relief, and some occasional fanfare, is going to step up and become a legitimate contender in this complicated contention of love.
Her role isn’t to be as explicit as the other two of course – and one must wonder just how deep into the novel this second season may follow since its seemingly an accurate replication of the source material if the first season is any indication. Depending on the result, it could place Rika anywhere from on the sidelines as an insinuated potential interest – or perhaps the series may even end up providing a few dedicated episodes.
Yet saving the complexities for the actual series debut, regardless of what we get of course, one aspect quite certain is that Haganai’s second season is certainly looking quite inviting.

YES! More Rika! She is my most favourite female anime character ever! She’s just so amazingly twisted. <3

Beautiful art.
Haganai is not a normal harem series where every heroine has a nearly equal chance to become closer to the main hero. The two main girls are to unbalanced.
I suppose that is the trick. The audience should think that this is a harem series but this is actually a fixed route true love story.
Yozora made the neighbour club to become friends with Kodaka again. Kodaka himself uses the club from the beginning as a place where he can meet Sena on a regular basis. He wants to be her friend but he is to afraid to admit his feelings for her. Sena is his only love interest and he is not interested in any other girl.
Kodaka’s reaction that he is “only surprised” about Yozora being his childhood friend makes sense though.

I concur – there’s an intricate element of plot behind each heroine and their relation to the main character, as well as the reason and extent to which they like him.

Ah, the obvious end. Someone should stab that end and insert the Rika/Maria/Kobato end.
