Newtype’s character rankings of October 2012 are skewed when it comes to the male half – however thankfully, the more important female chart is favorable in who it ranks at first, the rest being less acceptable.

Starting with the masculine of the list, somehow the Fate/Zero contestants are falling downward – and even Hyouka’s relatively likable albeit reserved male lead, Oreki, has been surpassed by the appeal of banality. Newtype’s rankings have already been long established as not particularly representative of the more discerning audience – although in the end, it’s not as if such values would alter the actuality either way, an undeveloped dull leading male remains so unless the series puts effort otherwise.

Now onto the far more meaningful portion of character rankings, it’s quite splendid to see the female character fanbase still have their sense as Saber tops the chart – as is only appropriate. The moeblob in second admittedly isn’t too awful either – being actually quite fair seeing as Hyouka has been developing well as of late, especially in comparison to all else of the ongoing season.

The remaining females on the chart are not deserving in that most stem from a series several years old – not necessarily meaning they’ve lost their appeal, C.C. remains much lovable for instance, although it seems rather lopsided to have such a broad timeline. And aside from those few, the rest, like Sword Art Online’s leading harem member, aren’t worthy of any recognition save for the negative kind.

Whilst not too worthwhile, the chart is respectable in how it serves as a reminder, or rather, an encompassing overview of the absence of any reputable female leads this season.

The badass without any charisma 1st… what a joke ><

And Chitanda 2nd, I wonder why japanese love naive looking characters…personnaly I don't like her. In contrast, Houtaro is cool and a Shikamaru-like, even if I dropped Hyouka, he was a pretty good main character.

And unfortunately, I'm pretty sure Asuna will be first the next time. SAO is exactly the same as Tengen Toppa Gurenn Lagann was in his time, a totally overrated anime.

Agree with all – except I would call Sword Art Online’s leading male a “badass”, it’s more like he’s invincible by default for being a protagonist.

Well, at least TTGL doesn’t have the still image paradox…

Well, remember when Inori used to be on this list (I think)? Just shows us how much the Japanese think of female “characters” in anime.

Saber will always (or atleast for a while) be top girl. .

    Damn Kirito is first O_O

Rankings already don’t have much substance – although male character rankings have even less worth than female character rankings in this modern age, for the obvious dominance of female characters.

Every time they do this poll, Kira and Lacus somehow always manage to make it on. I don’t get it, they come from what is regarded as the worst Gundam series, and are just shitty characters to begin with. Who even votes for them?

Who’s the girl in 6th place? Looks like a dude…

  • Wow..Lelouch And CC seem to be ranked way below….they are much better than the rest anyway….still Saber taking the lead is always welcome…and nice to see that CC is still alive in the hearts of many . The male ranking is so screwed up really…Kirito at No.1…supreme blunder
