An elemental workshop.

Kyoto Animation’s latest upcoming highschool love story “Chuunibyo demo Koi ga Shitai!” has unveiled its opening sequence early – and it turns out to be one which is fittingly generic and absent of originality.

This OP, available below, essentially solidifies the worst – as if the series didn’t look disgustingly recycled enough as result of the rehashed story and reused character designs, now it boasts an opening sequence stuffed with the heavily abused effects, angles, and scenes seen all too often.

Panned out walking scenes, sky emphasis, standing in a place of ruins with subtle shadowing, and the absolute most horrid and exploited of all, the sleeping on the ground with a spiraling out camera view – this is the entire OP summarized, and it’s not much different than what one will find with any other Kyoto Animation work, or conventional garbage in general. At this point, “Chuunibyo” is coming off as so platitudinous, it truly feels, or rather blatantly is, just a collective assembly of all the many tropes which Kyoto Animation has established over the years.

Indeed, it was repulsive as it was – yet the OP truly makes it feel as if no effort whatsoever has been put towards making anything unique. There is the short few seconds of gunfire – although this alone does not amount to much anything, it’s still streamlined within the predominance of the OP in a trite manner, no sudden heavy metal disruption for instance. Not to mention, guns are nothing new to highschool series.

Perhaps just a slither of a chance may still exist for this series’ success, in terms of quality that is – or at least it did it prior, as this opening sequence certainly does well to smother out any remaining hope.

    Slowmotioooon…. ZzzZzz….
I may have accepted this supermegaslow and boring clip of artwork if it had been the ED insted of the OP. Hope the anime itself won’t be as boring as this, since I would hate the animationquality of KyoAni to go to waste.

“I would hate the animationquality of KyoAni to go to waste.”

It seems like it’s too late for that.

I don’t mind openings if they’re generic since it’s hard to be completely original in making them. But I have to to agree. Despite the good visuals, the scenes were terribly boring and I hate it when openings are just focused on 1 or 2 characters.

    • Seven says:

The visuals are indeed excellent, although their subject matter is tired – and so is the general presentation, which is unfortunate.

I have to say the same of the music as well, it’s not a bad theme – although it’s exactly the kind of song you would anticipate.

I’m legitimately almost baffled by how unoriginal this is.

From what I heard in some sites, looks like the opening animation will be different than this.

        • Seven says:

Doesn’t change the fact that this acts as another confirmation of Chuunibyo’s unprecedented level of generic.

It’s openings like this that make characters look like complete idiots.

“I think I’m gonna lay in this meadow for a while. Get in touch with nature, maybe close my one eye.”

“I’m going to stare at this beach, and look very introspective. This will surely show how deep I am.”

“I open my arms to the sky, and show my spiritual side.”

“I got mad because my show got cancelled, so I thrashed my room.”

“If I walk just alongside this highway and look straight forward, I can remain calm and focused.”

“I just cut off this chicken’s head and now feathers are everywhere.”

Like what the hell is going on. It literally looks like a hipster teenager posing in urban locations for a social network profile picture.

The opening will be very different when it is aired in October 3, 2012. At least the music is nice.

it looks like an ed than an op for me

  • gargamesh says:

so , if this is the OP, imagine how boring the ED will be?

  • This reminds me…
Thank god Another was not animated by Kyoto Animation.

  • jackrakan says:

Not a very good opening. I’ll remind people that it’s a promotional opening, and that it’s not going to be the same opening for the actual series.

    • Seven says:

Doesn’t change that either way, it’s another sampling into the trite qualities of the series.

      • jackrakan says:

So if the actual OP is badass, then the series is confirmed awesome.
Now that I think about it, all my favorite series had great OPs.

        • Seven says:

“So if the actual OP is badass, then the series is confirmed awesome.”

No, because the character design is still rehashed – and the plot is still romance pablum.

Feathers must be the new moeblob. “Just add feathers!” Feathers make it seem like AIR version 2.0. And I think I’ve seen those clouds before in every previous KyoAni production.

Since this is super generic and all, I’ll be a dick a spoil it

    She dies in the end

    • Seven says:

      “She dies in the end”

I’d watch that if it happens in a brutal unforgiving manner.
