An elemental workshop.

After a substantial six year or so disappearance, Initial D was confirmed to again debut in animation form once more – yet not only this, the series isn’t wasting a second as it will apparently launch this Autumn.

The announcement of Initial D’s televised animated return was quite sudden – and one must wonder what sort of effort was put into the development of this latest coming installment as it seemingly took no more than a week for a release date to come, and one which promises a launch of November 2012, which is right on the horizon. As result, this means either those six years of absence were spent productively – or perhaps, someone needed to fill a time slot, subsequently deciding on re-birthing a dormant instant hit, in which case, it’s doubtful to be a hit.

And as mentioned when the original promise of a new series was made, curiosity revolves around from which point this series is to start up – it could be a “fifth stage”, which would be a direct sequel picking up from the previous, a re-imagining of the first season, or possibly a separate story altogether.

There’s also the question of visuals – Initial D is notable for distinctive computer graphic renderings on vehicles during races and drift scenes, as well as an overall, almost grunge, illustration style which would be superb in capturing the intensity of emotions felt during the high-speed downhill contentions.

As of yet, this series remains a wildcard – yet ideally of course, it won’t disappoint.
