Continuing the prologue of Sakasama no Patema, we see that our heroine, who has fallen a distance incomprehensible, now meets a boy on the other side of the world – each within in a separate state of gravity.
In the beginning, two characters experienced a dream that seemed important to them as individuals. The school boy had a vision of his family, and Patema, our adventurous leading female, had a vision of her guardian who we’ve seen has gone missing. While the setting has changed, one shouldn’t forget that Patema fell within the so-called “Danger Zone” – this being the very reason that she’s now found herself a place she has never seen before.
Patema awakes during nightfall in a forest, confused as expect – she has no idea which or what world she’s now within. Her seemingly valuable backpack has slipped, triggering her to attempt to retrieve it – yet it’s not such a simple task. She finds a gigantic hole in front of her that could possibly lead her out of the forest – and straight to her sack of personal items once more, although of course, that’s not how it goes.
Shifting over to a separate scene, the male highschooler is lying down in the grass – relaxing and contemplating simultaneously, likely pondering about his dream. However, interrupting his peace, he hears a cracking noise which startles him – Patema’s backpack hanging on the fence behind his sitting. While Patema’s trying to recover her backpack, notice that something’s not quite right – from Patema’s point of view, the fence is upside down on her side. She’s living in an inverted instance of gravity.
While Patema keeps trying to secure her possessions, the boy continues to stare simply dumbfounded and baffled. Suddenly, Patema calls for him to aide her as she’s beginning to fall upwards towards the sky – while the boy lives with gravity taking him towards the Earth, Patema falls to the clouds. Patema retrieves her backpack with assistance from the male kid – and it looks that a meeting of fate has brought together a peculiar cute girl and an ordinary yet not-so-average male highschooler as they grasp one another’s hand.
Before the shounen can say anything, gravity starts to tug him upward – even as he holds onto Patema, he’s hovering away into the sky along with her. A new world is found by both characters simultaneously as they each meet a realm they’ve never before known.
Yet prior to exceeding the clouds and heading any deeper into the skies, Patema’s drops her backpack, which subsequently falls into space – and apparently its absence balances the load between her and the boy, allowing them to float gently back to Earth. Patema still is being pulled upward by gravity – and thus, the boy must keep hold of her like a balloon as her walks over to a shed and takes refuge in there.
All the while as Patema was away, one of her guardians back underground finds her mask on the edge of the danger zone – immediately coming to realize what has happened, filling with horror all so visible in his visage at the thought, and running off to inform the elders.
This is but the third in a series of five minute shorts which all collectively make up the prologue to the upcoming film “Sakasama no Patema” – a movie which was believed bound to be revolutionary as the director is the same responsible for Eve no Jikan, and with this latest preview into what awaits, one should certainly have come to realize that indeed, this is something which has proved itself already, with a title rather true to its story.

Though the prologue remains short duration, it keeps getting better and better. I can’t wait to see the movie

The revelation of the inverted gravity bit was definitely a shock – wasn’t anticipating the name to be taken so literally. That also explains “batman” – it’s someone who made it into the underground world, and they understand how gravity works there.

Speaking of Batman – though now you mention about how Batman understands how gravity works, I think Batman is Patema’s friend, Lagos – someone that is precious to her. In episode 1, as i hopefully may recall in a specific episode, it is said that Lagos went missing and wanted to go on an adventure with her. I think Batman is her Lagos since he was going after her, but too bad she fell. At least she saw two different worlds.
