Shakugan No Shana’s Long-Awaited Kiss

Jun 7, 2012 @ 6:57 CDT

After so many years of stalling, Shakugan no Shana Final finally delivered – and the occasion is so momentous to the point that JC Staff has made the series’ eighth BD volume themed accordingly to commemorate.

There was a point in this series where the romance was executed so poorly, and dragged to such a ridiculous degree, that an attempt by the hero and heroine to lock lips just for a second would literally be blockaded by the sudden manifestation of a natural disaster. This sort of occurrence was common all throughout the first season, and made far worse in the second – however in the third, and appropriately dubbed “Final” season, the conclusion was quite perfect. And thus now, to see the two kiss is as if nothing in particular.

Not that it has become meaningless, yet rather, this is a series recognized and renowned for how horribly delayed the romantic progression was – anyone who watched this series was certainly infuriated as the potential was there, it was so blatantly obvious which two characters are “more than friends”, yet JC Staff kept up the redundancy for years. Individuals were surging as result of the frustration caused by the horrid romance which seemed so close, so perfect – yet a proper studio away from taking flight as it should have.

A local resident once summed up the rage nicely, a justified instance of profanity:

…all of the cock blocking and complete lack of progress in 2 seasons and 50+ episodes has worn my patience completely thin.

The second season was FILLED with Shana getting cock blocked. Hell, they even summoned a fucking TORNADO with it’s own SUPER POWERED Crimson Denizen at EXACTLY THE RIGHT MOMENT..It’s like they’re afraid of advancing the plot after establishing a pairing…I can’t possibly put myself through the pain of another season of HERP DERP “I CONFESS BUT I DON’T”.

Episodes would be bloated with everything JC Staff could conjure up to ensure that the leading male and female wouldn’t have their romantic moment together – memories of G-force winds plagued otaku for years, thousands of long days would pass as they awaited a proper continuation of the series. Yet JC Staff would essentially taunt the fanbase through remedial OVAs which provide little to no insight whatsoever – something which carried on for a short period of 1.5 million minutes till eventually, Shakugan no Shana’s third season debuted.

Now after so much was overcome in this third season, the result certainly feels almost refreshing – it’s as if a nation has been liberated, and civil rights have been established. So much fighting has led to not only the forgettable male character of this series being able to place his lips on the crimson something or another, Shana – yet they can do it so freely now, kissing right on the face of the series’ optical media disk package.

It’s nearly unbelievable – though it’s certainly rewarding. The many quotes one often hears are true – JC Staff’s excessive failures regarding this series have led them to make a single grand success.

Oddly, their kiss could have happened at any pivotal point in any of the previous seasons finale lead. It really would not have changed their characters in any significant way. It would only have made the kiss at the final finally that much more poignant.
